Happy Feet

Now I’m going to stray from my usual topic of home decor today, but I just had to share with all my readers the CUTEST nautical shoes from Lindsay Phillips.

Lindsay Phillips is a young entrepreneur whose footwear concept grew out of a high school art project. She began designing flip flops with colorful straps, each adorned with a unique button. Soon after, she realized she could make shoes with interchangeable straps and buttons, and this now booming company was born.

The Lindsay Phillips line includes flip flops (switch flops), ballet flats (snap shoes), and even heels. The shoe base comes in a variety of colors and materials, with interchangeable buttons and straps to match. What I love about these shoes is the flexibility. You can buy one solid colored base shoe, and several buttons, and voila…you now have a myriad of looks!

This season, Lindsay Phillips is featuring a broad selection of nautical/coastal themed buttons. I just can’t resist them!

For the Love of Red White & Blue!

It is not too early to start to think about this up coming Memorial Day Weekend, and how to decorate in celebration of the Red White & Blue!  Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nations service.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
~Lee Greenwood

Many people choose to hold picnics, sporting events and family gatherings on this weekend, as it is usually seen as the start of the summer season. For the fashion conscious, it is seen the day on which it is acceptable to wear white clothing.

I love red, white and blue decor, and tend to use it in my home year round, not just seasonally. Americana is always in! Finding red white & blue decor to celebrate this spirited weekend has never been easier. Here’s some red, white and blue inspiration for your home, table and party in honor of Memorial Day…and some special sweet treats for dessert!

And don’t forget dessert!!

DIY Scallop Shell Mirror

Well it all started last week when I ventured to Home Goods in search of a full length mirror. I found a great white easel mirror there for $39.99, and wasted no time setting it up in a guest room I’m redecorating.

It wasn’t until I stood it up that I noticed a huge blemish in the upper right hand corner. What to do? Inspiration kicked in later that day while I was walking on the beach. The particular beach I was on in Cutchogue had tons of beautiful scallop shells in all colors, shapes and sizes.

I decided right then and there I would use the shells to make over my damaged mirror. I was able to fill an entire painters bucket with shells, and get to work.

Seeing as the mirror is full length, I knew I’d have to enlist help. My daughter and I laid every shell out and sprayed them with Painter’s Touch Gloss in Crystal Clear.

When the shells are on the beach, they have a sort of salty, muted color. By spraying them with gloss, the beautiful natural color and pattern returns to the shell, after being covered up by sun and salt.

Then came attaching the shells to the mirror. For this I used E6000 craft glue. This is a great glue for crafting. It’s EXTREMELY strong and will hold your project together indefinitely. I created a shell pattern that involved three layers. I won’t lie, it took many hours between the two of us to get the whole thing done.

Mirror before I attached the rope

Finally, I visited the local marine supply store in my town to find natural manila rope to trim the edge of the mirror, and attached that with the E6000 glue as well.

I am SO happy with how it came out. It was painstakingly hard work, but it really is beautiful, and well worth the time and effort. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my daughter, as she really is a crafting queen. I hope you all enjoy it! I’m happy to answer any questions to help you make your own scallop shell mirror.

Sea Glass Jewels

For as long as I can remember I have been walking the beaches and collecting sea glass. My house is filled with vases and bowls full of beautifully weathered and polished pieces of glass. I am particular with my collection, as I prefer to keep only the blue, green and white pieces of sea glass. I sometimes am lucky to find a red piece, which I have heard comes from the navigation light of a ship. The best treasures are found on the beach and sea glass is a crafters gem!

There are so many craft projects that can be made using sea glass, and a coastal or nautical home wouldn’t be complete without it. In past posts, I’ve showed how to use sea glass to decorate in your home. Today, I’d like to share with you the works of some talented artisans who have created beautiful pieces of jewelry using sea glass. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite pieces and maybe you just might start your own collection!
